Geophysics studies and examines the conditions and physical phenomena that occur in the solid earth from the core to the crust. The study is based on the application of physical laws and concepts supported by other sciences including: mathematics, geology and other earth sciences, computing, and instrumentation. Therefore, Geophysics cannot be separated between scientific aspects and application aspects. Geophysics developed in this group includes sciences that include: Seismology, Geodynamics, Exploration Seismic, and Applied Geophysics to produce subsurface images. Geophysical Engineering is a science that is applied to identify and determine quantitatively and qualitatively the amount of earth resources that are beneficial to humans in improving the dignity of humanity.
GTE Research Group consists of 4 main areas of expertise namely:
- Earth Resources Exploration,
- Geophysical Computing and Imaging,
- Engineering and Environmental Geophysics,
- Reservoir Geophysics.
The four areas of expertise are based on the application of geodynamics. Activities undertaken are:
- Data acquisition, including designing and measuring geophysical parameters.
- Data processing, which involves analyzing and correcting data and modeling.
- Interpretation, which is the validation of conceptual models so that decisions can be made for appropriate engineering actions.

Collaborators
Bülent Tezkan received a degree in Geophysical Engineering in 1982 from the Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey and a PhD in 1986 from the University of Göttingen, Germany. From 1986 to 1999 he worked as a Research Scientist at the University of Göttingen, at the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven and at the University of Cologne. Marcus Gurk received Diplom Geophysiker in Institut für Geophysik, Westfälische-Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany and PhD in Institut de Géologie et d’Hydrogéologie, Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

Geofisika mempelajari dan mengkaji kondisi dan fenomena fisis yang terjadi pada bagian bumi padat (solid earth) mulai dari inti bumi (core) sampai kerak (crust). Pengkajian tersebut didasarkan atas penerapan hukum dan konsep fisika yang ditunjang oleh ilmu lain diantaranya: matematika, geologi dan ilmu kebumian lainnya, komputasi, dan instrumentasi. Oleh karenanya dalam ilmu Geofisika tidak dapat dipisahkan antara aspek keilmuan dan aspek aplikasi/terapan. Geofisika yang dikembangkan dalam kelompok ini meliputi keilmuan yang mencakup: Seismologi, Geodinamika, Seismik Eksplorasi, dan Geofisika Terapan untuk menghasilkan citra bawah permukaan. Teknik Geofisika adalah ilmu yang diaplikasikan untuk mengidentifikasi serta menentukan secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif besarnya sumber daya bumi yang bermanfaat bagi manusia dalam meningkatkan harkat dan martabat kemanusiaan.
Bidang penelitian KK GTE terdiri dari 4 bidang keahlian utama yaitu:
- Eksplorasi Sumber Daya Bumi,
- Komputasi dan Pencitraan Geofisika,
- Geofisika Teknik dan Lingkungan,
- Geofisika Reservoar.
Keempat bidang keahlian tersebut dilandasi oleh aplikasi geodinamika. Kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah:
- Akuisisi data, termasuk mendisain dan melakukan pengukuran parameter geofisika.
- Pemrosesan data, yaitu melakukan analisa dan koreksi data serta membuat pemodelan.
- Interpretasi, merupakan kegiatan validasi model konseptual sehingga keputusan dapat diambil bagi tindakan keteknikan yang tepat.
